(RepublicanView.org) – News outlets on April 10 reported that according to police, a UPS driver was recently shot and killed in Alabama. Birmingham Police Department spokesperson Sergeant LaQuitta Wade announced that officers responded to a call reporting gunshots on April 9 and found an unresponsive male with a single gunshot wound. Paramedics pronounced 44-year-old Anthony Lamar Love Jr. dead at the scene.
While police reported that they believe Mr. Love was deliberately targeted, they have yet to establish a relationship between the shooter and the victim. Officers also confirmed that Mr. Love was on his way home from a shift at the UPS facility in Birmingham when the shooting occurred in the parking lot. Sergeant Wade explained that ten shots were fired and the shooter immediately fled the area.
“This is an awful situation. When you leave for work, you expect to return home from work,” Wade added, according to WBRC.
A UPS spokesperson issued a statement saying the company was deeply saddened by the driver’s death and expressed its condolences to Mr. Love’s family and friends. The spokesperson added that UPS is cooperating fully with police inquiries and would do all it could to help solve the crime.
Tributes to the slain man poured onto social media, with friends and neighbors expressing shock and disbelief. A local hairstylist, who frequently received deliveries from Love, said he always had a smile on his face and said hello to everyone in her salon.
Mr. Love was married with children and had worked with UPS for over two decades. Several of his colleagues rushed to the scene of the incident, and reports state that many were visibly shocked and upset. Family members also arrived at the scene at Inglehook Lane, where the UPS Customer Care and Distribution Center is located.
Alabama Crimestoppers urged the public to come forward with any information. Sergeant Wade sought to reassure Birmingham residents that she believed there was no further public threat.
