Massive Anti-Retail Theft Operation in California Leads to 117 Arrests

California law enforcement agencies wrap up a major crackdown on organized retail theft, leading to the arrest of 117 suspects.

At a Glance

  • Authorities arrested 117 suspects in a retail theft crackdown across California.
  • The operation, led by the California Highway Patrol, recovered 767 stolen items.
  • Three stolen vehicles and two illegal firearms were seized.
  • Key charges included petty and grand theft, organized retail crime, and firearm possession.

A Coordinated Effort

Authorities conducted a statewide crackdown on organized retail theft, resulting in 117 arrests. The California Highway Patrol led the operation on December 20, with significant support from multiple law enforcement agencies and retail partners. This collaboration involved 10 agencies and 56 retail entities, highlighting a comprehensive approach to tackling this escalating crime.

The law enforcement initiative resulted in the recovery of over 767 stolen items valued at more than $38,000. Additionally, officers seized three stolen vehicles and two illegal firearms, further contributing to the operation’s success. The range of charges included petty theft, grand theft, organized retail crime, possession of a firearm by a felon, and auto theft.

Broad State Support

The arrest operation aligns with recent legislative measures supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, aiming to combat organized retail theft. Governor Newsom signed new bipartisan legislation introducing tougher penalties for repeat offenders, providing prosecutors with additional tools for pursuing felony charges. This legislative action underscores California’s commitment to curbing organized crime activities.

“The state stands committed to protecting consumers, especially as they go about the final shopping sprint before the holiday season. I’m proud of the efforts of CHP and local law enforcement to protect consumers and businesses throughout California,” Governor Gavin Newsom said of the operation.

Governor Newsom also emphasized the state’s investment of $1.1 billion since 2019 in preventing crime and enhancing public safety, including substantial support for local law enforcement agencies. Last year, $267 million was allocated to 55 agencies to combat organized retail crime, a testament to the sustained effort to safeguard businesses and communities.

Looking Forward

The success of this operation marks a significant milestone in California’s ongoing battle against organized retail crime. Since its launch in 2019, the CHP’s Organized Retail Crime Task Force has been pivotal, participating in more than 3,200 investigations and recovering over $51.3 million in stolen property. This proactive strategy also led to the arrest of more than 3,500 suspects.

“Through proactive enforcement operations and strong partnerships with local law enforcement and retailers, we were able to protect the state’s businesses and consumers during one of the busiest times of the year,” CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said.

The public is encouraged to continue supporting these efforts by reporting any information regarding organized retail theft to the California Highway Patrol. As California leads the charge against this form of crime, these coordinated efforts offer a blueprint for nationwide initiatives aimed at preserving the integrity of retail businesses and ensuring public safety.
