(RepublicanView.org) – Rashida Tlaib has provoked a backlash for hosting an event commemorating “Nakba” – a term used to describe the creation of the state of Israel as a catastrophe. The Michigan Representative has a long history of antisemitism accusations, and her event featured groups such as Emgage Action and Americans for Justice in Palestine Action. Both groups take radical positions. Emgage Action seeks to “center the legislative priorities of the diverse Muslim American communities.”
Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said, “This is outrageous. We condemn this completely.”
Tlaib has called for America to end relations with Israel and accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of racism and apartheid.
In 2022, the Congresswoman introduced a resolution asking Congress to recognize “Nakba.” She describes this as the “catastrophe” of uprooting Palestinian towns and villages. “The Nakba is well-documented and continues to play out today,” she said.
In response, the former Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, called her “shameful.” Danon said Israel accepts criticism, but what Tlaib reiterates is not criticism but “pure hate.”
Elon Musk’s Twitter carried out a fact check of Tlaib’s claims that Israel is an apartheid state. She referred to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s visit to the Jewish state and said it was born from ethnic cleansing. The fact check states that Israel was born with Resolution 181, and any “ethnic cleansing” that took place affected both Jews and Arabs and was the result of “the war initiated by 5 Arab states who opposed the existence of Israel.”
Finally, it points out that 21% of Israel’s population is Arab, and all ethnic groups enjoy equal rights under the Israeli constitution.
Tlaib has been banned from visiting Israel because she supports the so-called BDS campaign. Boycott, Divest, Sanction is a left-leaning movement that calls for Western companies and governments to refuse to trade or do business with Israel. Its proponents compare BDS to the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa.
