(RepublicanView.org) – Officials on Sunday, July 21, confirmed that in the wake of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, a new bipartisan and independent panel is being formed to review the incident and determine exactly how it happened. The panel members, appointed by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, will reportedly have experience working in security and law enforcement.
The review is expected to take 45 days and will focus on the planning by the U.S. Secret Service ahead of the event, as well as the actions taken by the agency – along with state and local authorities – to ensure that Trump was safe. Members of the panel will also assess the actions of the Secret Service after the rally and will also determine whether proper guidelines were followed.
In a statement issued by the Department of Homeland Security, the first new names of those who will be seated on the panel were revealed. They include the former secretary of the Department of Public Safety David Mitchell, and Mark Filip, who previously worked as a federal judge and a deputy attorney general under the George W. Bush administration. Frances Townsend, who served as a Homeland Security adviser under the same administration, will also be on the panel, along with Janet Napolitano, former Homeland Security Secretary.
In a joint statement, members of the new independent review panel said that they formed the group to quickly identify ways that the U.S. Secret Service can improve and “enhance” their work, adding that they must work together to ensure that incidents like the one that unfolded on July 13 don’t happen again.
Outgoing Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, who resigned this week, said that she supports the formation of the review and that she had hoped to ensure an incident like this never happens again. She added, before she resigned, that the Secret Service is continuing to take new steps to ensure that they review their actions internally.
