Record-Breaking Drug Bust Off Queensland Coast
In a significant blow to international drug trafficking, Australian authorities have seized the country’s largest cocaine haul to date. The operation, which unfolded off the coast of Queensland, resulted in the confiscation of 2.3 tons of cocaine with an estimated street value of A$760 million (US$490 million). This massive haul, equivalent to 11.7 million individual street deals, underscores the scale of the drug trade targeting Australia.
The operation began in November after authorities received intelligence about the Comanchero gang’s plans to import a substantial quantity of drugs. The Australian Federal Police (AFP), in collaboration with the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and the Australian Border Force (ABF), tracked a fishing boat that had met with a mothership in international waters to collect the cocaine shipment.

Dramatic Arrests as Smuggling Attempt Falters
The smugglers’ plans were thwarted when their boat broke down 18 kilometers off K’gari island, leading to a series of arrests. Two men were apprehended at sea, while 11 others were arrested on shore. The suspects were captured in various locations, including a fast-food restaurant, during a traffic stop, and in Brisbane.
“We know that criminals go to extreme lengths, and often risk their own lives, to smuggle drugs into Australia with no regard to the harm they cause to Australian communities,” said Commander Stephen Jay.
Among those arrested was the Brisbane vice president of the Comanchero Outlaw Motorcycle Gang, highlighting the involvement of organized crime in drug trafficking. All 13 suspects, including two juveniles, now face charges of conspiracy to import a commercial quantity of drugs, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
International Drug Cartels Target Australia
This record-breaking seizure sheds light on the growing issue of international drug cartels targeting Australia. The country’s high cocaine use and elevated street prices make it an attractive market for criminal organizations. Commander Jay emphasized this point, stating, “Australia is a very attractive market for organized criminal groups to send drugs such as cocaine.”
The cocaine shipment originated from an unidentified South American country, highlighting the global nature of the drug trade. This bust follows a recent Colombian-led operation that captured six “narco subs” with 225 metric tons of cocaine, including 5 tons on a semi-submersible vessel en route to Australia, further illustrating the ongoing battle against international drug trafficking.
Ongoing Efforts to Combat Drug Trafficking
This successful operation demonstrates the effectiveness of international cooperation and intelligence sharing in combating drug trafficking. However, it also reveals the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement agencies. The mothership involved in this operation remained in international waters and was not apprehended, indicating that the fight against drug smuggling is far from over.
As Australia continues to grapple with the threat of drug-related crime and violence, this record-breaking seizure serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance and robust law enforcement efforts to protect communities from the devastating impacts of illegal drugs.
