(RepublicanView.org) – Representative Annie Kuster (D-NH) announced on March 27 that she will not campaign for reelection in 2024.
The 67-year-old said in her announcement that she never intended to serve “forever” but offered no further explanation for her decision.
Kuster served the largely rural New Hampshire district longer than any other representative during her six-term run. The district, which includes Concord and Nashua, hasn’t elected a Republican since 2013 after Charlie Bass left office. It also shares a border with Canada.
Kuster, who previously worked as a lawyer, did say that she will complete her final term through its last day in January 2025. She said she would spend that time continuing the “progress” that has occurred under the Biden administration. She also promised to maintain a leadership role with the New Democrat Coalition, a controversial congressional caucus that promotes far-left business and financial policies. She currently serves as the chairwoman.
She is the latest representative to join an exodus from the House and Senate ahead of the 2024 general elections. Most of the departing representatives cite more family time and unprecedented division in Washington DC as their reasons for leaving office. It has left both parties scrambling to find qualified candidates as campaign season heats up.
Businessman and local politician Colin Van Ostern announced his campaign to replace Kuster just one day later. He served as the manager of Kuster’s first campaign for office and as Executive Council for the governor over two terms. He ran for governor in 2016 but lost to Chris Sununu. Van Ostern claimed that he wants to make the government work for the middle class again. He was joined by five Republicans who are hoping to flip the district.
Some of his proposals include cheaper healthcare, daycare, and college tuition. He also wants to lower housing costs while supporting abortion nationally.
