(RepublicanView.org) – The National Rifle Association (NRA) is reportedly gearing up to fight back against what it’s arguing is an unconstitutional push for gun control in New Mexico.
Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed an executive order in September 2023 suspending all carrying of firearms in Albuquerque for a month, whether they were concealed or not. She later amended the order so that it would apply only to playgrounds and public parks.
David Herrera, a Biden-appointed federal judge, rejected a request from citizens to suspend the order on grounds that it violated the 2nd Amendment. He claimed the citizens failed to provide sufficient proof that their case would succeed in court. He said the governor could likely point to historical precedent that would support her gun ban.
Advocates promised a slew of new lawsuits to fight the order. Violating the order could have resulted in arrest and a $5,000 fine if local police had chosen to enforce it.
Grisham has since proposed new restrictions such as raising the age to purchase a firearm to 21, implementing longer waiting times, prohibiting guns in most public areas, and banning what she calls “assault” guns. The slew of anti-gun proposals were brought during the state’s legislative term for 2024.
The NRA accused Grisham of punishing law-abiding citizens, adding that criminals often obtain their firearms illegally. They also accused her of “torching” the Constitution, according to Fox News Digital. NRA Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) Executive Director Randy Kozuch referred to Grisham as an “enemy” of Second Amendment rights, declaring that the NRA was challenging her in the state’s Supreme Court and would continue to push back against her gun measures.
Grisham has previously told reporters that no constitutional right “is intended to be absolute.” She has claimed that her administration will use “every tool” in its disposal to end an epidemic of gun violence.
