(RepublicanView.org) – Irish music star Sinead O’Connor died from natural causes, according to a London coroner. The Dublin-born singer died last July at the age of 56, but no cause was provided at the time. There was speculation immediately after her death that she may have ended her own life following her son’s suicide.
On Twitter over a year before her death, she wrote, “I’ve decided to follow my son. There’s no point living without him.” She is also known to have suffered from a series of mental health problems, including bipolar disorder, complex post-traumatic stress disorder, and borderline personality disorder,
However, Southwark Coroner’s Court in London says there will be no further investigations and the matter is now closed.
Sinead O’Connor shot to fame in 1990 with her smash hit Nothing Compares To You, which she followed up with several hit albums. Rolling Stone magazine named her Artist of the Year in 1991, and she won the Brit Award for Best International Artist the same year.
Her controversial political views often created more headlines than her music, and on Saturday Night Live in 1992, she tore up a picture of the Pope live on air. In 2018, she converted to Islam and changed her name to Shuhada’ Sadaqat. This followed ordination as a priest by an unauthorized church in France years earlier. After her conversion to Islam, she immediately began launching verbal attacks at white people, saying she never wanted to spend time with them again. She later apologized.
O’Connor was open about her difficult childhood and described years of physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her mother. As a teenager, she developed a shoplifting addiction and was sent to a girls’ reformatory convent in Ireland. She described the convent as a prison and said she cried every day. Her mother died in a car accident when Sinead was 18, and she later said she forgave her for the trauma she endured as a child.
