DeSantis Calls on Florida Party Chair To Step Down Following Allegations

(RepublicanView.org) – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has called on the chairman of the Sunshine State’s Republican party to resign amid allegations of assault. Sarasota Police Department issued a redacted report on charges facing chairman Christian Ziegler including an accusation of rape and sexual battery on October 2.

Speaking to reporters in Georgia, Mr. DeSantis said, “He’s innocent ’til proven guilty, but we just can’t have a party chair that is under that type of scrutiny,” before adding that he believes he should step down.

According to the Florida Center for Government Accountability, Mr. Ziegler and his wife, Bridget, have been involved in a “three-way” encounter with the unnamed complainant, who filed a police report against Mr. Ziegler on October 4 following an alleged assault at her home. Police have reportedly seized Ziegler’s phone to investigate allegations that he secretly filmed the three-way encounters.

According to CBS News, Christian Ziegler’s attorney, Derek Byrd, confirmed the police report and said his client is cooperating with police but maintains his innocence and would be “completely exonerated.” Byrd added that it is common for public figures to face spurious accusations, and people should avoid rushing to judgement.

Bridget Ziegler, the chairman’s wife and third party in the alleged “three-way,” is also a key figure in GOP politics in Florida. She co-founded the conservative Moms for Liberty organization and sits on Sarasota’s school board, having won Ron DeSantis’s endorsement.

On the day of the alleged incident, the woman agreed to meet with both Zieglers but changed her mind upon learning that Mrs. Ziegler would not be present. She asserts that Christian Ziegler then came to her apartment alone and raped her. A witness confirmed to police that the unnamed complainant called her immediately after the incident and was “very emotional and distraught,” according to Politico.

Florida Democratic Party Chairwoman Nikki Fried has echoed the Governor’s call for Ziegler’s resignation in a statement, saying, “I applaud the accuser’s bravery in coming forward against a political figure as powerful as Christian Ziegler.”
